Bird Flue/H5N1 Symptoms and Treatment

Avian influenza is flu infection in birds. The disease is of concern to humans, who have no immunity against it. The virus that causes this infection in birds can mutate (change) to easily infect humans. Such mutation can start a deadly worldwide epidemic.

Symptoms

Symptoms of avian flu infection in humans depend on the particular strain of virus. In case of the H5N1 virus, infection in humans causes more classic flu-like symptoms, which might include:

  • Cough (dry or productive)
  • Sore throat
  • Fever greater than 100.4°F (38°C)
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Diarrhea
  • Runny nose
  • Headache
  • Malaise
  • Muscle aches

Treatment

Different types of avian flu virus may cause different symptoms. Therefore, treatment may vary.

In general, treatment with the antiviral medication oseltamivir (Tamiflu) or zanamivir (Relenza) may make the disease less severe -- if you start taking the medicine within 48 hours after your symptoms start.

Oseltamivir may also be prescribed for persons who live in the same house as those diagnosed with avian flu.

The virus that causes human avian flu appears to be resistant to the antiviral medicines amantadine and rimantadine. Therefore these medications cannot be used if an H5N1 outbreak occurs.

People with severe infection may need to be placed on a breathing machine. Experts recommend that persons diagnosed with avian flu be put in isolation.

Doctors recommend that people get an influenza (flu) shot to reduce the chance of an avian flu virus mixing with a human flu virus, which would create a new virus that may easily spread.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved a vaccine to protect humans from the avian flu. Experts say the vaccine could be used if the current H5N1 virus starts spreading between people.

Home Remedies for Acidity, Blood pressure,Cataract,Colds,Cough and Fever or Flu using Basil

The uses of basil are many and varied. Most of its claims have been verified scientifically, while others remain in the borderline of skepticism and disbelief. The general uses for which it is prescribed as a home remedy ranges from the common cough and cold to blood-pressure symptoms and even paralysis and hemiplegia. I give below some of the more common ailments and their treatment with the use of basil alone or in combination with other herbs.

Acidity:

Grind equal amounts of the dried blossoms of basil, bark of the Neem (Margosa) tree, and black pepper into a homogenous mixture. Take a level teaspoonful of this powder morning and evening with a draft of water, but do not drink milk immediately after. The acidity will be removed from the body with the sweat and urine.

Blood pressure:

The drinking of basil-leaf tea keeps the blood pressure even.

Cataract:

Mix a little honey with the juice of the basil leaves and apply over the eyes every morning and evening. Fresh cases are dissolved without surgery, while chronic ones are rendered "ripe" so as to be surgically removed.

Colds and Cough:

Make a fine powder of the following:

--Basil leaves (dried in shade) 300 gms
--Cinnamon 50 gms
--Bey leaf 100 gms
--Aniseeds (fennel) 200 gms
--Cardamom 200 gms
--Red sandal-wood 200 gms
--Dried orange-peel 25 gms

Take two teaspoonfuls of this mixture and boil it with about 500 ml water till half the quantity of water is left. Add honey (and milk if preferred) and drink it like tea twice a day.

Fever/Flu:

Boil about 10 gms of basil leaves in 250 ml water till the water is reduced to 125 ml, then add a little rock salt to taste. This tea produces immediate sweating and relieves the fever. An option is to drink tea made of basil leaves, black pepper, and candy sugar.

H5N1 Bird Flue

H5N1 Bird Flue

The eight people in pakistan who became infected with the H5N1 bird flue strain probably got ill as a result of contact with poultry and some degree of human-to-human transmission.

Human-to-human transmission of H5N1 bird flu is extremely rare, but not unheard of.

What is H5N1?

H5N1 is a strain of the bird flu virus - the strain everybody is worried about because human beings have no immunity against it, it is very virulent (powerful and dangerous).

Scientists are afraid that the H5N1 bird flu virus strain will sooner or later transform and become easily human transmissible. This has not happened yet. It is still exceedingly difficult for birds to infect humans, and even harder for a human to infect another human.

It is thought that one of the ways H5N1 could mutate would be by infecting a person who is ill with the normal human flu virus. The bird flu virus would then have the chance to exchange genetic information with the human flu virus and acquire its ability to spread easily from human-to-human (become easily human transmissible). If this happened, we could be facing a serious, global flu pandemic.
